Everybody in the room is starting together
The hardest part of learning to dance is walking in the first time. This group is built to make that easy: it is a true Level 0 class, starting from zero on Monday 2 November, with a room full of people who have never danced bachata before either.
Bachata is the friendliest of the Latin dances to begin with. The basic step is four beats long and you can learn it in an evening, which means you spend the rest of your time on the things that actually make dancing feel good: the music, the connection with your partner, and the confidence to get up and dance at a party.
We teach social bachata rooted in the music of the Dominican Republic, drawing on traditional, modern and sensual styles. The emphasis is always on dancing comfortably with another person rather than memorising choreography. Read more about where bachata comes from.
Your first few weeks
What the group covers once we get going.
Hearing the beat
The one thing every dancer needs. You will learn to pick the rhythm out of a song and stay with it, so the music starts doing half the work for you.
The basic step
Bachata is built on a simple side-to-side step. We take it slowly, on your own first, then with a partner, until it stops needing your attention.
Leading and following
How to invite a movement and how to receive one: a calm, comfortable connection that makes both people feel good, whichever role you dance.
Your first turns
Once the basic feels steady we add the first turns and changes of place, the handful of moves that let you dance a whole song socially.
Where to find us
Classes are at Tenerife Movement Studio in Los Gigantes, a proper sprung dance floor with mirrors, five minutes from the harbour (view on the map).
Come a few minutes early on your first Monday so we can say hello properly. It helps if you message us beforehand. We will look out for you at the door, and let you know if anything ever changes at short notice.
Already danced a little? The Level 1 improvers group runs straight afterwards at 19:00 in the same studio, and plenty of people stay for both.
Questions people usually ask
Do I need a partner?
No. Most people come on their own. We rotate partners during the class, so you dance with everyone and nobody is left standing out.
I have never danced before. Is that really okay?
That is exactly who this group is for. It is a brand-new Level 0 group, so everyone starts on the same day from the same place: the very first step.
Do I have to commit to a course?
No. You can pay as you go at 10€ a class. If you know you are coming regularly, a block of four works out cheaper at 35€, or 50€ for a couple.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move in, and a second pair of shoes. We keep the studio floor clean, so nobody dances in the shoes they walked in with: bring indoor shoes with a smooth sole that lets you turn, or dance in socks or barefoot. No special dance shoes needed, and trainers with a lot of grip make turning harder on your knees.
How old are the people in the class?
All ages. Our groups run from people in their twenties to people in their seventies, and everyone dances with everyone.
What if I miss a week?
Life happens. Message us and we will tell you what the group covered, and you can pick it back up the following Monday.
Come and dance with us on Monday
Send us a message and we will save you a place in the new group. It is the only thing you need to do before you turn up.
